Abstract: Within the framework of research on the implementation of degassing of flat coal seams from mine workings, the necessity of initiation slots creating on the walls of degassing wells with the maximum possible diameter is shown. The most widespread schemes of extending the cutting tool from the body and their trajectories are considered and analyzed which allowed determining the most rational of them. Presented are the technical solutions and theoretical substantiation of the parameters of the slotting machine ensuring the increase in the effectiveness of realization of the method of interval hydrofracturing in a coal seam for the purpose of its degassing by increasing the diameter of the initiation slot. The analysis of devices designed for making a slot has been carried out. The parameters of a promising design of a slotting machine with lever kinematics of the advancing cutting organ providing its maximum output along the rational trajectory of cutting the initiation slot were determined. The strength calculation of the cutting tool of the slotting machine was carried out, according to the results of which the required dimensions of its cross section were determined and the choice of material for its manufacture was substantiated.
