Abstract: Modern loading organs of continuous action with executive elements in the form of gathering-arms of various designs and gathering-stars are widely used in roadheaders of selective action and loaders. All the variety of such loading units is united by the general principles of the formation of the flow of material and loads, which, however, are not fully understood. Over the past decades, various scientists have studied the physical processes occurring in the loading units of various designs. As a result of recent studies, it has been established that, under certain conditions, on such loading units, it is possible to transfer the stockpile material into a fluidized state, which reduces the generated loads on the drive. It is shown that the choice of the objective function when optimizing parameters during design depends on the operating mode of the loading unit. Also, to optimize the designs of the loading units, a criterion for the quality of the trajectory of strokes performing complex movements, for example, gathering- arms are driven by a four-link or crank mechanism, is proposed.
