Abstract: Since the beginning of railway electrification, power quality issues have been a major concern in railway networks due to their unique characteristics. Throughout the history of railway electrification, numerous methods have been studied and implemented to improve the power quality in both AC and DC traction power supply systems. This article provides an overview of power quality issues in the development of railway electrification and explores the importance of power quality and the requirements for systems to ensure appropriate power quality. Compensation strategies are discussed and compared. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the power quality issue in railway power supply/distribution networks for researchers and engineers working in the field of railway electrification
