Abstract: In the face of persistent sanctions and fierce market competition, the domestic mining industry, particularly its coal segment, faces the pressing need to reduce operating costs. Optimizing the fuel and energy costs consumed by open-pit trucks during the transportation of overburden and minerals has been recognized as one of the most effective ways to minimize the cost of open-pit mining. This paper analyzes currently implemented innovative projects aimed at diversifying the petroleum (diesel) fuel used in trucks, particularly BelAZ open-pit trucks. Examples include recent innovative projects by BelAZ OJSC to develop open-pit trucks powered by cheaper and cleaner fuels: hydrogen, electricity, and liquefied natural gas. It is noted that one of the successful examples of implementing this strategy in Kuzbass is a large-scale project to modernize the BelAZ fleet of dump trucks. By integrating cryogenic on-board fuel systems into heavy-duty mining dump trucks, they are being converted to dual-fuel (gas-diesel) operation, in which liquefied natural gas serves as a cost-effective alternative, partially replacing traditional diesel fuel. This paper focuses on the components and operating principles of the innovative cryogenic on-board fuel system installed on heavy-duty BelAZ gas-diesel mining dump trucks. Key technical requirements for the cryogenic on-board fuel system are presented, enabling partial substitution (30 to 50%) of diesel fuel with natural gas during operation of BelAZ dump trucks.
